N4N and DW Neighborhood Watch Coffee Time

By Carolyn Ajie

October 11,2025. Del Webb Mirehaven Neighborhood Watch and Neighbor 4 Neighbor today held a joint Coffee Time gathering in the Amenity Center. The guest speaker was Pete Gelabert, APD Northwest Area Command Crime Prevention Specialist. Pete said being a gated community confers many advantages in crime prevention – especially as criminals are looking for easy access. Gelabert also explained that the NW is the largest geographic area in Albuquerque with the lowest population which means fewer police resources are assigned to this area. Pete said the police rely on residents to supplement their efforts to control crime and encourages the use of cameras to record any suspicious activities.

Del Webb Mirehaven Neighborhood Watch is a cornerstone of crime prevention in our community. It is a partnership between neighbors and law enforcement to foster communication and information sharing to make our community safer. John Newell is our Watch Commander. He said there are several openings for Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and welcomes anyone interested in being a Captain to contact him at dwmnwwbox@gmail.com. You can also ask to be added to the distribution list for monthly email updates.

The Neighborhood Food Project

By Kim Hafermalz

Food security in Albuquerque is becoming precarious with the defunding of several federal programs that supply regional food banks (https://franetic.com/nm-food-banks-grapple-with-federal-funding-cuts/) rising unemployment, and the possible ending of SNAP benefits in the future. We can wring our hands over the plight of others less fortunate than we are, or we can do something about it that is easy and almost painless.

There is a project that started in Ashland, Oregon called The Neighborhood Food Project (https://neighborhoodfoodproject.org/).
