New York Times echoes Mirehaven News

By Cathy Carter

In the August 1 issue of Mirehaven News there is a story titled Who’s Hungry? It is a story about food insecurity in the United States in general and in New Mexico in particular. The story includes information about both the economic security and the food security of New Mexicans, especially senior adults in the state. The basic premise of the story is this — There is no food security without economic security.

One week after Mirehaven News published its story, the New York Times published a similar one. The headline read, “In One of the Country’s Poorest States, Crippling Budget Cuts Loom”. The subheading described the contents of the story, and the concerns — “Health care. Food. Outdoor recreation. Wildfire protection. The arts. President Trump’s new domestic policy law will have wide-ranging effects in New Mexico, which depends heavily on federal funding.”

The story continued, saying “The state is among the biggest per capita recipients of federal money, taking in $3 for every dollar it sends in taxes. About 39 percent of its residents are on Medicaid — one of the highest rates in the country — and 23 percent receive food assistance. Nearly a third of the state, 24.7 million acres, is public land.”

"New Mexico will have to find new sources of revenue to pay for everything the Trump administration is shifting to the state. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and the state’s congressional delegation, all Democrats, warn that their state, one of the country’s poorest, will be hard-pressed to make up the shortfall.”

These cuts, part of the so-called Big Beautiful Bill are not scheduled to go into effect until after the 2026 midterm elections. Mirehaven News will continue to follow the story.

The Times story has been gifted to Mirehaven News for the next 30 days. If you would like to read it and see just what we will be up against, you can find it here — NYTimes story about New Mexico.
